Search clicks, visits and saved drafts: keep the units separate

Distinguish search clicks, measured visits and useful saved work. Define units, denominators, observation periods and missing data before comparing results.

Équipe éditoriale Ovydo · · 10 min read · estimate

Put search clicks, website visits and saved drafts on the same slide and they can look like a funnel. They may describe three different populations. The order of the boxes does not prove that the people counted in one box reached the next.

The useful first question is therefore about units: what is being counted, in which system, over which period? Only then can you decide whether a comparison or rate means what its label suggests.

This guide proposes a measurement record, symbolic examples and a way to distinguish useful saved work from an empty draft. No live analytics export, acquisition result or Ovydo product telemetry is presented.

Write the unit into the measurement name

“Traffic” and “activity” are convenient headings and poor definitions. A search click, measured session, distinct account, workspace and saved version are different objects. Name the object before discussing whether its count increased.

Google’s Search Console overview defines search clicks and impressions and defines CTR as clicks divided by impressions. Those are search-report measures. They are not counts of website sessions or people who created an account.

Google Analytics uses its own session definition, including session-start conditions and inactivity timeout rules. This is one collector’s convention, not a definition to assign to every report called “visits”. This article does not imply that Google Analytics is installed on Ovydo.

Use a short measurement record

FieldQuestion to answer
Object and unitClick, measured session, distinct account, workspace or saved version?
PopulationWhich property, site, environment and eligible group?
TimeWhich dates, time zone and event-time convention?
SourceWhich report or canonical business record, with which definition version?
Counting ruleEvery event, first eligible event or distinct object?
ExclusionsTests, examples, retries, internal activity or unavailable collection?
AvailabilityObserved, missing, preliminary or not applicable?
InterpretationWhich decision can this measure support, and which remains open?

Source: original editorial template, 16 October 2026. It contains no observed counts.

For a session measure, add the actual collector and its relevant configuration. For a distinct account count, identify the account eligibility rule. A shared word such as “user” should not conceal a switch between browser identifiers and canonical accounts.

Calculate a rate within a compatible population

A rate needs a numerator and denominator that answer the same question. Preserve their counts as n/N alongside the percentage when appropriate. The label should explain who had an opportunity to meet the condition.

For a symbolic search example, let C be clicks and I impressions from the same report scope, filters, period and aggregation level. Then CTR = C / I when I is available and greater than zero. This is a formula, not a reported result.

If the denominator is a proven zero, the rate is not applicable. If it is missing, the rate is unavailable. Those cases call for different labels, even if both leave the percentage blank.

Preserve the aggregation level

Search Console’s data documentation distinguishes property and page aggregation. Their totals can differ. Keep that scope when interpreting a chart or table.

Do not simply average page CTRs and call the result a property CTR. If you combine compatible, non-overlapping groups, calculate the intended ratio from the appropriate counts. First establish that the groups can be combined; arithmetic cannot repair an incompatible aggregation.

Write the filters beside the calculation. A search-type change, different date window or switched page grouping can change the question the numbers answer, even when the chart title remains familiar.

Treat a cross-system funnel as a separate claim

Suppose you have a search report, a measured-visit report and a product account count. You can describe each available aggregate with its source. To describe a transition between them, you need a defensible relationship between the relevant populations and events.

A time window shared by three exports is not that relationship. Neither is a common brand name across the website and application. Record what is measured, what can be joined under the approved measurement design, and what cannot.

Do not make missing attribution a reason for hidden collection

If the connection is unavailable or not authorised, present separate aggregates. Explain that they do not establish a site-to-product conversion rate. Avoid creating an identity link, collecting content or expanding tracking simply to complete a chart.

Before linking website and application data, establish the permitted purpose, necessary data and actual relationship between the measures. This article has not inspected Ovydo’s collection or attribution setup and makes no claim about which collector or linkage is active.

Define useful saved work before calling it activation

Creating a draft can produce an empty object. A save can refer to an example or an automatic action. Reopening a draft can show access without demonstrating useful work. Decide what the measurement is meant to recognise before choosing an event name.

Keep three facts separate:

  • Created: the draft exists, even if it is empty.
  • Saved: an identifiable content version has been durably recorded, with confirmation.
  • Resumed: an authorised person can retrieve and read an existing saved version.

These distinctions help define a measure. They do not establish satisfaction, commercial value or retention, and do not describe events verified as active in Ovydo.

What could make a save eligible?

The proposed rule requires a confirmed durable version containing user content, excluding an example. Its origin must be a user action or a template actually modified by the user. Exclude failed saves, empty content, test environments, QA activity, automatic seeds, unchosen generation and retries counted again as new work.

The qualification must come from documented business facts. A flag saying that content is useful does not prove that its qualification rule is correct. If origin, confirmation or content eligibility is unknown, stop qualification. A raw save count may still be reported with its limitations; it must not acquire the label “eligible activation”.

No creative text, prompt or media needs to appear in the analytics report to explain these criteria. The future technical mapping must establish the necessary facts and counting rules within the approved data design.

Compare activation, repeated work and time separately

A useful save can be one candidate signal of a first completed task. Define the task before choosing the observation window. The following questions illustrate three different measures; they do not describe Ovydo telemetry or prescribe a market benchmark.

MeasureDefinition to settle before calculation
First useful work, by accountAmong eligible accounts with a complete observation window, what proportion reached a first confirmed, useful save? State the starting point, window, exclusions and attribution rule.
New work later, by workspaceAmong eligible workspaces with enough follow-up, what proportion reached a useful save on a different draft in a later period? A revision of the original draft is not a new draft.
Time to first useful saveFor accounts that met the first-work condition, how long elapsed from the defined starting point? Show the included count and the proportion that never met the condition in the window.

These are editorial examples, not adopted product metrics. Accounts and workspaces are different units. Choose periods that fit the question and allow every included unit enough observation time. A short median among successful accounts does not describe the accounts excluded from that calculation.

If the definition starts with a confirmed account, specify what confirmation means in the actual journey. Account creation alone may not establish it. Missing business facts remain missing; changing the label does not supply them.

A technical return is not a collaborative contribution

Loading a saved version can establish a technical return if its conditions are met. Even a return by another member does not, by itself, establish that they commented, changed the content or made an approval decision.

For a candidate collaboration measure, specify a meaningful canonical action by a second distinct, authorised actor on the relevant draft and revision. Also establish which person the comparison uses: the original object creator may differ from the author of its first useful version.

If those facts are unavailable, leave collaboration unverified. Do not rename a view “successful collaboration” because it is the closest event in the dataset. A contribution, when established, still does not prove time saved or better creative quality.

Preserve missing data rather than cleaning it into success

Search Console’s official export notes state that some unavailable markers displayed as ~ or - become zeros in downloads. Preserve the source context when reading an exported zero; do not assume it always means a measured absence.

Use three separate labels in the working report: zero observed, unavailable, and not applicable. Add coverage notes for preliminary data or incomplete collection. Do not restore omitted information by inventing a likely value.

For the symbolic examples in this article, no export exists. The honest result is a set of definitions ready for review, not an empty dashboard labelled zero.

Ovydo’s public Analytics presentation can be explored with the same questions about source, period and unit. The resource centre is a public discovery destination. Neither link is an inspected dashboard or the address of this unpublished manuscript.

Checklist for a measurement review

  • ☐ Each measure names its object and unit.
  • ☐ Source, filters, period and time convention are recorded.
  • ☐ Numerator and denominator use compatible populations.
  • ☐ Property, page, account and workspace grains remain explicit.
  • ☐ Cohorts have enough observation time for the chosen window.
  • ☐ First eligible saves are distinguished from creation and retries.
  • ☐ A technical return remains separate from a contribution.
  • ☐ Missing, observed zero and not applicable have different labels.
  • ☐ Cross-system rates rely on an authorised and established relationship.
  • ☐ The interpretation states what the evidence cannot conclude.

Frequently asked questions

Is a Google search click the same as a website visit?

They belong to different measurement definitions. Keep search-report clicks and your collector’s measured visits separate unless a specific, valid comparison has been established.

Can we report progress without a complete funnel?

Yes. Report the available measures separately with their scope and gaps. A useful documentary review can also improve definitions before any numerical baseline exists.

Does every save count as activation?

A save is only a useful activation signal if it meets the definition of the task you want to recognise. Establish content eligibility, durable confirmation and population exclusions; otherwise report the limitation.

Can an immature cohort be compared with a mature one?

Not as if both had the same opportunity to meet a full-window condition. Separate incomplete observation from the mature rate and show which cohort is being discussed.
